Candidate, LD8 House of Representatives

Developing costly business-directed government sanctions does nothing to strengthen our borders nor our national security.  Furthermore, it focuses the problem on the small business community at a high cost to our economic security rather than solving the problems of human trafficking and inept federal immigration policies.  Their exist ways within our present system of immigration for tracking and routing undocumented immigrants that are not being used because doing so is not as glamorous as rounding-up and arresting unsuspecting laborers.

Protecting Arizona's financial security must be a top priority.  As a state we must generate support from the many other states in our nation who have been overwhelmed by the high cost of illegal immigration and its impact on our schools, communities, crime and social services.  As your legislator, I will ensure that Arizona taxpayers do not bear the financial burden of the entire country for our national security.

Border security must include increased use of technology that is tried and tested before it is paid for.  The recent embarassment over paying for a border fence that does not work was not just costly but completely indicative of government officials asleep at the wheel - which is exactly how we got here in the first place.  Our current system is one of the biggest police failures ever.  In the past 30 years we have increased our border security six-fold while our number of illegal immigrants has also increased six-fold.

We must create policies that focus on protecting our economic security.  The continued employment of illegal immigrants destroys the workplace security we have fought for over the past century.  Having a system where only those here legally can be employed is the only way to ensure that employers will provide safe, acceptable working conditions for adequate pay including benefits.  Corporate sanctions for non-compliance must be levied at those businesses who refuse to comply.  Conversely, compliance must be attainable for those businesses who wish to work within the system.

Mostly, we cannot have lifelong government employees writing policy to address this issue without the input of the business community.  The authors of the employer sanctions law have no understanding of the business sector and made no attempt to discover what is plausible.  They have no understanding of how the high cost of employee overturn, expensive compliance measures and government sanctions can eliminate business profits putting people like you and me out of business.  Policies directed at employers and employees must be written with the interest of a strong small business community at heart and the input of those impacted most.
